Like so many, we have come to love the Celery Fields in Sarasota.
Whether you come for the exercise, the birding, or just to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, the Celery Fields will leave an indelible impression on you and you’ll want to return again and again.
But now, due to a series of circumstances that have been brewing for decades, the beauty and tranquility of this area is threatened. And that’s why we created this project, to provide a resource for people just like you to help Save The Celery Fields.

Hi Jake,
Thanks for visiting the site! We’re actually preparing an entire write-up on the Recycling Center project, including all the actions for people to take. I’m sure this petition will be included, along with some other steps that might have a bit more weight in the minds of the Planning Commissioners and County Commissioners for Sarasota.
Thanks again, and we hope to stay in touch with you!
How was the Celery Fields funded? Was public money used,, or did the city own the land?
Hi Patricia,
Thanks for your question! The Celery Fields lands were purchased by Sarasota County with public money in the mid-1990s following major flooding in the Phillipi Creek basin in a 1992 storm. Today, the County still owns the land, but several of the properties (3 out of the 4 properties known as the “quads” at the corner of Apex Road & Palmer Boulevard) have been quietly offered for sale by the County. The property on the SW corner is under contract to be sold to TST Ventures, LLC, which is owned & operated by Jim Gabbert. That’s the property that is the subject of the August 23, 2017 public hearing before the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners.
I hope this is helpful! If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know!
